I had a car accident in which I was "split down the middle", and my bladder was avulsed, which means it was cut off in the wreck. I have had 2 bladder reconstruction surgeries so far and will have my third in August of this year.

I was born this way. The doctors say I was born with a defect in the nerves that control my bladder. So I never had control of it in the first place.

I was in a car wreck where I was ejected out of the vehicle. I had an old pickup that didn't have seat belts. I ended up breaking my hip, spinal problems and severe nerve damage from the wreck.

Thank you for everyone sharing your stories.

Could anyone share if they became incontinent instantly after an injury or illness or if the incontinence started slowly and worsened.

In my sitiation it was instant. I went from having complete bladder control in all situations to having immediate stress incontinence right after child birth. It was a very hard adjustment. I am sure like most of us on this site it was just one more thing on top of other problems. I know in my situation since I had such horrible, life threatning pregnancies, I couldn't believe that even after I delivered my sons I still was having to deal with so many after affects, permanent and temporary. I know I was even a little mad. I felt like someone should have told me this could happen, that nothing may ever be the same. But then I got over it, I realized even if they had told me I would of had children anyway.

The urinary part was instant, the bowel started happening over time. When I first got home from the hospital they told that it should pass over time. That I had just suffered from a broken hip and it all would heal. That wasn't the case. I was also angry at the time. My life, at the moment that the 17 year old decided not to stop at the stop sign changed right there. I used to be so angry at the kid. Over time I have learned to be greatful for what I have. Everyone told me that I shouldn't have even lived after the wreck. I was thrown out of my pickup, and it started to roll over me. Luckily I had a guardian angel watching over me that day and the drivers door caught on the ditch bank and acted as a spring and kept the pickup from rolling over me. I remember seeing it start to roll and saying a prayer asking that god watch over my family and my daughter. It has been a challenge every since that day. Some days worse then others. I try to keep positive.
